Print the Code First, Decide the Link Later

Print deadlines and content deadlines never line up. The badges have to be at the venue Thursday; the page they should open is still an argument in someone's inbox. The standard workaround is to print a code pointing at a placeholder page and swap it later — which works, but it means every code in the run is your job to configure, one at a time, before anyone can use it.

A first-scan QR code inverts that. It goes to print with no destination at all, and the first person who scans it decides where it points. They type the link once, it saves, and from that moment every scan — theirs and everyone else's — redirects straight there.

The problem with configuring codes yourself

One code, one destination, one edit: fine. The math changes the moment codes stop being one-offs.

Print fifty name badges for a conference and each attendee wants their own link — their portfolio, their LinkedIn, their booking page. You do not know those links in advance, and collecting them by email before the print run is its own small project. Print a hundred equipment tags and each one should open the manual for that specific machine. Print table tents for twenty vendors at a market and each vendor has a different shop.

In every case the person who knows the right link is not you. It is the attendee, the technician, the vendor. Handing them a blank code and letting them fill it in removes the entire collection step — and the spreadsheet, and the follow-up emails, and the last-minute edits at the registration desk.

How the setup window works

A first-scan code is a normal dynamic code with one difference: it starts empty, and it starts open.

When you create it, a setup window opens automatically for seven days — enough slack to send files to the printer, wait for delivery, and hand the codes out. During that window, scanning the code shows a short form: one field, one button. Enter a link, save, done.

The moment a link is saved, three things happen at once:

  1. The window closes. The code is now a plain dynamic code pointing at that link.
  2. Every future scan redirects. No form, no interstitial — straight to the destination.
  3. You are told. An email lands in your inbox and a notification appears in your dashboard, both showing the code's name and the exact URL that was set.

That last point matters more than it sounds. You handed out a code that a stranger could point anywhere; you should find out what they pointed it at without having to go looking.

Why it is a window and not a permanent mode

The obvious design would be "the code stays open until somebody claims it." We deliberately did not build that, and the reason is physical.

A printed code lives in the world. It sits on a badge in a drawer, on a sticker under a shelf, on a poster in a hallway. A code that is permanently open to whoever scans it is a code that anyone can redirect, months later, to anywhere they like. The setup window bounds that exposure to the period when you are actually handing codes out.

A code with no destination is a blank cheque. The window is what stops it being a blank cheque forever.

On the code's page you can extend the window by an hour, a day, or another week, or close it immediately. Closing it does not break the code — an unclaimed code with the window shut simply shows a "nothing here yet" page, and you can reopen it or set the destination yourself whenever you like.

What the form accepts

The person filling in the link is, by definition, not you, so the field is stricter than the one in your dashboard:

  • HTTP and HTTPS only. javascript: and other schemes are rejected outright.
  • No local or private addresses. localhost, 10.x, 192.168.x, 169.254.x and friends are blocked — a printed code should not be a probe pointed at somebody's internal network.
  • No links back to QRMapper. A code that points at another QRMapper short link is a redirect loop waiting to happen.
  • Five attempts per minute. Enough for a typo, not enough to hammer the form.

And if two people scan the same fresh code at the same second, exactly one of them wins. The second sees a plain message — "someone just set this code up" — instead of silently overwriting the first person's link.

Where it earns its keep

Conference badges. Print blank, hand them out at check-in, let each attendee point their own badge at whatever they want people to find. The badge becomes a business card that its owner controls.

Equipment and asset tags. Stick a code on the machine now; the technician who services it first scans it and attaches the manual, the maintenance log, or the supplier's parts page. Nobody has to map serial numbers to URLs in advance.

Vendor and market stalls. One batch of table tents for the whole market. Each vendor sets their own shop link when they set up on the morning.

Client handoffs. Print materials for a client whose site is not live yet. They point the code at it themselves the day it launches, and you get an email confirming they did.

Most QR features are about changing where a code points after it is printed. This one is about not having to know in the first place — print the pattern, hand it over, and let the person who knows the answer supply it.
